To The European Commission, the European Council, the European Parliament, and EU governments

Petition
We call on the European Union and its member states to demand an immediate global moratorium on the export, sale, transfer and use of surveillance technology. This technology has been used by repressive governments to abusively target journalists, activists, and human rights defenders, including in the EU.
Why is this important?
We like to imagine that we’re protected against the government spying into our personal lives. But headlines everywhere are breaking the story about a new kind of super-surveillance that means this era is over.
Governments can now easily target journalists, politicians, and even people like us with this digital surveillance. And they’re doing it across the world. [1]
And it’s not just our phone calls or texts — it’s contact lists, location data, photos and videos, too. The phone’s microphone and camera can even be remotely activated to covertly make recordings. [2]
Unfortunately, there’s very little that ordinary people like us can do to stop this most invasive kind of surveillance — unless we act together. The EU and our governments can take bold decisive action against this new kind of super-surveillance – by not allowing a market for this kind of technology.
This scandal is just at its beginning, and our governments will already be under the public eye. A petition to ban this kind of super-surveillance could push the EU to take a bold stand against it. Will you join?
