Celebrating the "tradition" of New Year's Eve with fireworks and rockets is not only expensive, but also harmful to people, animals and the environment.
I have been involved in animal welfare for years and it hurts my heart when I see my pets and wildlife suffering on New Year's Eve.
Anyone who has a pet knows that New Year's Eve is a nightmare for all pets, and pets sometimes perceive the deafening noise, the bright flashes and the unknown smells as a life-threatening situation. Loud firecrackers, hissing rockets and bright flashes put many dogs, cats and small animals in fear and panic.
Such traumatic experiences can lead to significant psychological damage in the form of anxiety disorders. Fireworks not only put the animals in fear of death and panic, but can quickly become a deadly danger. Pets should spend New Year's Eve safely indoors and should not be left alone for long periods.
If you have a heart for animals, you should celebrate the end of the year without rockets and firecrackers if possible.
Wild animals are particularly sensitive to potential dangers, because in nature they have to survive every day through mindfulness, flight or defense. Especially in winter, our domestic wild animals have to manage well with their powers, since they have only limited energy and food reserves available. A high loss of energy due to disturbances or panic fleeing can have life-threatening consequences.
For the birds, the sky becomes an inferno, especially in the cities.
Other unsightly side effects are the amount of garbage that covers the streets on New Year's Day and the high level of noise pollution, which means a great deal of stress, especially for animals.
On January 1, the fine dust concentration in the air is higher in many places than it is throughout the year. Fireworks on average release around 4,000 tons of fine dust, which corresponds to around 15% of the annual fine dust pollution from road traffic. If the body is exposed to too high a concentration of fine dust, the small particles can settle on our bronchi. This affects the airways and can lead to cardiovascular problems, respiratory diseases and even cancer.
In addition, there is a high risk of injury to people from fireworks: burns, eye injuries and hearing damage are still relatively light accidents.
Ask the mayor of your city to campaign for a peaceful and animal-friendly New Year's Eve and to ban the burning of any fireworks. Support your friends and acquaintances for a New Year's Eve without firecrackers and rockets.
The majority of Germans are against fireworks - according to a current survey: https://www.tagesschau.de/inland/boeller-silvester-101.html
I demand: Ban on New Year's Eve fireworks for private individuals!
Show beautiful fireworks laser shows instead!
