Equalise access to cannabis across the European Union now and allow all patients to access this potentially-beneficial medicine. Cannabis medicines have been proven to alleviate pain and suffering from a range of chronic and debilitating medical conditions.

It’s time for EU countries to legalise and regulate cannabis with a set of common rules for all countries to make medical cannabis accessible and affordability and to reduce harm from prohibition.

Why is this important?

Johanne is in constant, severe pain 24 hours a day. A botched knee operation severed her nerves and left her with severe pain across her whole body. She tried many medications and alternative treatments, but nothing worked. Some even made the pain worse. Doctors told her to try cannabis, but she was worried about getting it illegally. [1]

When France started a nationwide medical cannabis trial, Johanne was lucky to be one of the few selected. France is one of several EU countries starting trials following new research on the benefits of medical cannabis for pain relief. But still, too few patients have access to these potentially life-changing medicines. [2]

The EU has always left medical cannabis rules to the national level because the medicine was considered controversial for so long. Now that its medical benefits are widely accepted, we have an opportunity to force an EU-wide change for the better. [3] Some EU countries, like Czechia, are already suggesting we work on European equality in access to cannabis. [4] And finally, there are now more EU countries prescribing medical cannabis than not.

If we convince our national governments, all European patients could have the opportunity to access this potentially life-changing medicine.
