The planned landfill on the very outskirts of Novi Sad is planned at 300m distance, instead of the minimum 500m distance set by law from the residential houses in the settlement of Nemanovci, which belongs to the Novi Sad Local Community: "Pejićevi salaši - Nemanovci". The binding legal document of Serbia, which is stated in all plans of this landfill, but is not respected nor applied, is the "Uredba o odlaganju otpada na deponije" Sl. glasnik RS 92/2010 (Prilog 1. čl.1.). The citizens of Nemanovci pay taxes on construction land (Zone IV of Novi Sad) and therefore would have to have full legal protection, but it seems they are as second-class citizens. [1]
The planned landfill will exclusively dispose of all regional waste without primary and secondary separation or any recycling, which is mandatory in most developed countries.
The planned landfill would be located 500m from the last houses in Klisa Novi Sad, and only 300m from the Mega market and the Heineken Brewery, as well as the international furniture salon Lesnina and new future retail businesses along the international highway E75 .
Permanent pastures will be destroyed as the only habitat and feeding ground for the colony of "Strictly protected" bird species - the European Beekeeper (Red Coraciiformes), which is on the verge of extinction in Europe.
Due to the construction of the landfill, it is planned to cut down more than 1000 trees aged 30 years, as well as to bury the lake-pond "Kasapska ada", which is the closest green oasis in the north of Novi Sad. [2]
The planned regional landfill would be located only 6.5 km from the center of Novi Sad, and 5 km from the first wells near the source of the Novi Sad water system. This is a direct danger for the penetration of heavy metals and the pollution of underground watercourses that are flowing from the landfill to the Danube River.
The Ministry of Environmental Protection completely ignores all these facts, that had already been presented to them, by a group of citizens of Nemanovci, in a letter dated April 5, 2021. There has been no response to date, despite the appeal of the citizens for help and protection regarding these issues.
The City Administration for Urbanism and Construction Affairs of Novi Sad completely rejected all written objections to the Plan of the regional landfill, which had been submitted by 1450 signed citizens. Even though all these allegations and complaints to 3 previous landfill plans in 2012, 2019, and in 2021, have already been submitted the city still intends to recklessly add this new, even larger regional landfill to the existing Novi Sad landfill on the outskirts of the city, which has existed for more than 50 years.
On March 15, 2019, the petition against such a regional landfill was handed over to the mayor of Novi Sad, by the group of citizens of Novi Sad, with 1096 signatures and he still completely ignores it, even though Novi Sad was elected the European Capital of Culture in 2022, not the the capital of regional waste.
