Do everything in your power to uphold the fundamental rights of people on the move. You have a chance to stand up for the fair and just Europe we all believe in - they can nip these plans in the bud and take this spooky surveillance off the table.

Why is this important?

People sent people on lifeboats, nearer to danger in a merciless sea. Human rights violations ignored, no accountability taken for abuse. [1] But that's not all.

Now, Frontex, EU's most well-funded agency in charge of border enforcement, is set to gain more power for spooky surveillance backed by Artificial Intelligence (AI).

The EU could give more money to bolster Frontex's surveillance arsenal, including AI drones, lie detectors, and facial recognition tech for scanning people on the move - and pushing them back into the merciless sea. [2]

The reality is, this spooky surveillance flies in the face of our fundamental rights, and does nothing to extend peace and unity to those on the move.

Lawmakers have a chance to stand up for the fair and just Europe we all believe in - they can nip these plans in the bud and take this spooky surveillance off the table. But we know that won’t move unless we do - unless they feel so much pressure from below that they can’t afford to sit this one out!

But time is running out, in a matter of weeks a vote on the Artificial Intelligence Act will happen. So will you call on European politicians to protect people on the move before it’s too late?

Treat refugees in a human way, they already have had a terrible time fleeing their countries. There needs to be border control, but act humanly and don't use frightening methods such as Frontex does and is planning to expand. Thank you in the name of justice!

Democracy is a human concern (not a technical problem), the very foundation for dignity and therefore the only pathway to universal Human Rights: anywhere in the world. So those already victimized by violent regimes, irresponsible governments and criminal organizations must not be put at their mercy by democratically chosen European leaders committed to human by shortcuts such as AI technology which by definition is beyond accountability or transparency of any kind. Remember: future generations will judge us for miscalculations in this domain, rightly hold ALL OF US accountable; and this whether or not actively involved or merely looking the other way.

The fundamental rights of people on the move must be protected. We cannot accept using AI-powered tools to deny those fundamental rights.

Reading a book called "My Fourth time, we drowned"& it's harrowing. The EU, UNHCR and Frontex are all deliberately operating to send refugees back to unsafe countries, rather than helping the most vulnerable. This is a disgrace and human rights violation of the highest order.

We have already seen what inhumane excesses Frontex is capable of even without AI surveillance equipment. The EU should not collude with the agency by funding equipment enabling even greater human rights abuses.
