To the European Commission

We ask you to begin infringement proceedings against Poland for illegally operating the Turów lignite mine. The EU must ensure that the mine is closed to safeguard local residents’ groundwater in multiple EU member states.
Why is this important?
Imagine losing all access to safe drinking water in your home, all because a foreign country's government won't stop illegal mining in your backyard. Unfortunately, this is a reality for the local residents of towns near the Turów lignite mine.
The mine is located right on the Polish-Czech-German border, and extracts 30 litres of water per second from the ground, threatening the supply and safety of groundwater for local residents. The mine’s license just expired in May, but the Polish government illegally extended the license. [1]
But the EU Commission can stop this by taking Poland to the European Court of Justice. The Court could then force the mine to stop operating, ending the threat to local residents’ groundwater. But local battles like this struggle to get the attention of the EU Commission. That's how our community can make the difference - our people power from across Europe can pressure the Commission to act!
