We are calling on the EU to enhance and swiftly adopt the Directive on combating violence against women and domestic violence. The Directive should criminalise all forms of sexual exploitation of women, including sexual violence and abuse over women's sexuality, and all forms of online violence against women and girls. We also call to set high standards for specialised support mechanisms to protect victims and ensure their access to justice and reparation.
Why is this important?
Most of us believe that no matter who we are, or where we grow up, we deserve to live a life free from sexual violence. Unfortunately for many women and girls living in Europe, this is not the case. The harsh reality is that you know someone who has suffered some kind of gender-based violence. It may even have been you yourself. In the EU 1 in 3 women claim to have suffered physical and/or sexual violence. [1] Behind these alarming facts are the names that often appear in the news or even worse, survivors who do not report abuse for fear of not being believed. We have a lot of work ahead of us if we want to make the EU a safe space for women and girls. Currently, Europe is divided on how to tackle gender-based violence in the EU. While some countries are willing to discuss and take action, others deny that gender-based violence exists [2]. But there is hope - The European Commission has proposed a new law, currently being debated by Members of the European Parliament (MEPs) [3]. This new law is a step in the right direction, but there are some gaps. Will you add your voice to get our politicians to close the gaps and develop a new law against gender-based violence?
